How and when to aerate a lawn

Choose solid or hollow-tine aeration for compacted UK lawns and time the work for recovery.

At a glance

  1. Test whether the soil is compacted.
  2. Choose a recovery season.
  3. Work moist, firm—not saturated—ground.
  4. Use hollow tines for stronger relief.
  5. Top-dress and overseed only where needed.

Does your lawn need it?

Water sitting on the surface, thin grass on walking routes, hard soil and shallow rooting can indicate compaction, but drainage problems may also come from soil layers, slopes or blocked outlets. Push a garden fork into several areas and compare resistance.

Do not puncture ground until you have considered irrigation pipes, cables and other buried services.

Solid versus hollow tines

Solid tines create holes and are suitable for lighter routine work, though repeated use in very heavy soil can compact the sides of each hole. Hollow tines remove plugs, making real space in dense soil. Leave or collect clean cores depending on the finish and soil.

On a small lawn, work a fork into the soil and ease it slightly without tearing the turf. Mechanical aerators need careful operation and suitable access.

After aeration

Brush an appropriate sandy-loam top-dressing into open holes if it suits the soil and goal; avoid creating incompatible layers. Overseed thin turf and keep it moist. Reduce the traffic pattern that caused compaction, otherwise the benefit will be temporary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I aerate a waterlogged lawn?

Wait until it drains enough to be moist and firm; working saturated soil can smear and compact it further.

Do lawn aerator shoes work?

They make shallow holes but do not remove soil, so they are less effective for serious compaction than hollow tines.
