How to improve drainage in a wet lawn
Diagnose compaction, runoff and deeper drainage issues before attempting to fix a waterlogged lawn.

Map the water
Photograph puddles after different storms and note how long they remain. Check whether a downpipe, patio, neighbour’s land or compacted path concentrates runoff. A low spot needs a different solution from an entire garden sitting on heavy clay.
Never direct water onto a neighbour’s property, highway or building foundations. Drainage design has legal and structural consequences.
Improve the root zone
Hollow-tine aeration removes compacted soil and opens routes for air and water. Appropriate top-dressing and organic matter can gradually improve structure during renovation, but adding a thin sand layer to incompatible heavy soil can make matters worse.
Keep mower and foot traffic off saturated ground so the pore spaces are not squeezed shut again.
When simple work is not enough
Water that persists for days, appears near structures or emerges from an unknown source warrants qualified assessment. French drains and soakaways need suitable falls, outlets, ground conditions and compliance; they are not universal DIY fixes.
In permanently damp shade, a moss lawn or moisture-tolerant planting may be more realistic than fine grass.
