What scarifying actually does
A spring-tined rake or powered scarifier pulls loose moss and thatch from the soil surface. Some organic layer is normal; intervention is useful when it forms a dense mat that blocks air and water or when moss conflicts with your chosen finish.
Expect the lawn to look rough immediately afterwards. That is why timing and recovery matter.
A controlled method
Start less aggressively than the machine allows. Make one pass, inspect what is being removed, then cross the first direction if needed. Avoid repeatedly digging into bare soil or ripping out well-rooted grass.
Collect the debris and mix suitable clean material into compost in manageable quantities. Keep powered equipment away from stones, edging, irrigation and cables.
Recovery and prevention
Overseed openings, keep them moist and avoid heavy traffic. Aerate compaction, improve drainage, raise close mowing and address deep shade so moss and thatch are less likely to dominate again.
Scarifying alone does not cure the growing conditions beneath the lawn.
