January to April
In January and February, clear damaging leaf mats and avoid saturated or frosted grass. March is assessment time rather than a guaranteed mowing start. During April, warming soil supports reseeding, light aeration and a gradually increasing mowing rhythm.
Late cold snaps and wet ground can shift every task. A missed calendar date is less harmful than working in destructive conditions.
May to August
Growth often peaks in May and June. Mow frequently enough to take small amounts, edge when required and feed only if the lawn lacks vigour. Through July and August, raise the height, slow down in drought and give priority watering to establishing seed or turf.
Leave selected margins or patches longer if wildlife is part of the plan.
September to December
Early autumn is the best general renovation period: scarify, aerate, top-dress and reseed according to need while recovery remains active. Keep leaves moving and raise mowing height. By November and December, work becomes occasional and condition-led rather than routine.
