Mowing well

Can you mow wet grass?

Why waiting for a dry lawn usually gives a safer, cleaner cut—and what to do when wet weather will not stop.

At a glance

  1. Check the soil underfoot as well as the leaf.
  2. Wait for dew or rain to dry.
  3. Use a high setting for a necessary cut.
  4. Walk slopes before bringing out equipment.
  5. Clear wet clumps after mowing.

What goes wrong in the wet

A mower can push damp grass flat, then miss it or tear the tips. Heavy clippings stick under the deck and drop in piles that smother the leaf below. On saturated soil, footprints and wheels squeeze out air and leave ruts that remain visible long after the cut.

Electric equipment also needs to be used strictly within the manufacturer’s safety instructions. Never improvise in rain, standing water or conditions where you cannot keep secure footing.

Finding a workable weather window

A breezy afternoon after morning rain may be better than the next dew-heavy morning. Touch the lower canopy, not just the tips, and press a shoe into the soil: if water rises or the surface deforms easily, postpone.

When grass has become long during repeated rain, do not compensate with a close cut. Remove a small amount at the highest useful setting, collect or spread clumps, then make a second cut after recovery.

After a wet cut

Brush or rake apart obvious clumps before they form yellow patches. Clean the mower only after isolating its power source and following its manual. If wheel marks remain, allow the soil to dry before attempting to lift or repair them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mow grass with morning dew on it?

Waiting for the dew to lift gives a cleaner finish and reduces clumping.

Does a hover mower make wet mowing safe?

No. Wet slopes, soft soil, poor cutting and electrical safety concerns still apply.
